A scientist in California is trying to recruit at least ten thousand laptop users to provide an early warning system for earthquakes. The technology is already built into laptops in the form of motion detectors and these can be used as seismographs. The accelerometer in the laptop would detect tremors and allow the 'quake catchers' to send the information back to a central computer. ...

Erik Gates, who was best known for his guest appearances on the popular TV show 'Mythbusters', died last Sunday at the age of 47. Gates, who owned his own electric company with his brother, was working on the roof of a client's house when he fell through a skylight. He was working on the roof with a colleague, but his coworker says he neither heard nor saw the fall. Although Gates initially survived the fall and was still talking when paramedics arrived on the scene, he died later that day of blunt force injuries to his chest at Los Robles Hospital. ...

Kim Peek has died from a heart attack according to the Salt Lake Tribune and the Associated Press. Kim Peek was the inspiration for Dustin Hoffman's character in the movie 'Rain Man'. Kim's constant companion and caregiver was his father Fran Peek who took him on speaking engagements and essentially shared Kim's amazing memory with the world. Kim Peek was 58. ...
