Steve Jobs Struggled With iPhone 4 Reception Live at Unveiling
By Cheryl Chong - July 23rd, 2010
Steve Jobs gave the world its first look at Apple's highly anticipated “iPhone 4” on June 7th at the Worldwide Developers Conference. The new model come with an abundance of new things to play around with; the crowd was in the palm of Job's hand as they cheered each new feature that was unveiled - until Jobs himself lost connectivity while demonstrating the new iphone's web features - the crowd gasped. At this point Jobs blamed the problem on an overabundance of WIFI connections in the auditorium and strongly urged everyone to close their laptops and turn off their WIFI connections (click the 3rd video near bottom of page).
The phones officially went on sale June 24th; $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB. The iPhone 4 boasted a battery upgrade, Apple's new A4 processor, and video calling capabilities. At a resolution of 960 by 640, the “Retina Display” screen boasts four times the pixel density yet still remained at the familiar 3.5-inch screen size. This makes it the highest resolution display on the smartphone market. The iPhone 4 itself is a quarter thinner than the previous model, it is also the thinnest smartphone on the market at 9.3mm.
More of a mini-computer than a phone, the new iphone has additions and enhancements that will cater even more so to gamers. "There are well over 100 new features. It's perfect for gaming," proclaimed Jobs who later impressed the crowd with a gyroscope-enhanced game of Jenga (see 1st gyroscope video near bottom). The gyroscope enables the detection of pitch, roll, and yaw. Working together with the iPhone's accelerometer, it has the capacity to provide six-axis motion-sensing, with CoreMotion programming tools further enhancing precision.
'Eliminate: Gun Range' is a game specifically designed to interact with the iPhone's gyroscope technology:
Another addition to the app store that is sure to be a hit, is the newly introduced Guitar Hero app, available for $2.99 with initial songs by The Rolling Stones, Vampire Weekend and The White Stripes. Further three-song packs will be released for $1.99 per pack.

Interesting thing about iPhone is that it will be using the new iPhone OS4, also known as the iOS4. As for the new features, we'll be able to access Apple's iBook store from iPhone and quickly transfer ebooks from iPhone to iPad or iPod. Also I'll have to mention that the new iPhone 4 will be using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with 802.11n standard, UMTS/GSM and Quad-band HSDPA/HSUPA.
