New York Doormen Reach Agreement And Avoid Strike

Section:

Midnight passed in New York and the dreaded doorman's strike, dubbed "doormaggeddon" didn't materialise. People in apartment blocks, security departments in large stores, financial institutions, plus many others were sent into a state of insecurity and panic over the looming strike.

Upmarket hotels like the Sheraton in Midtown Manhattan, held their breath as negotiations continued but an agreement was reached to give all doormen a new four year contract, plus ten percent extra pay and it was also agreed that there would be no cuts in the benefits workers enjoy. If the strike had gone ahead it would have been the first strike by New York doormen in twenty years. The last strike was in 1991 and it lasted for two weeks and The Huffington Post reported that the problems had been resolved.

So, why was there such a panic over a doorman's strike? Apart from the obvious security factor, many people living in expensive apartments might have found themselves without anyone to put out their garbage and carry their shopping.
