Rare Blue Moon makes an appearance for the end of 2009

Have you ever wondered where the saying "once in a blue moon" came from? This old saying is based on an actual event, a blue moon. A blue moon is a rare occurrence, and no, a blue moon does not mean that the moon will be blue at night. The term blue moon refers to a full moon that is not in conjunction with the regular monthly pattern. In fact, a blue moon only happens once every two or three years because of the extra days that accumulate through the years.

In 2009, you will have the opportunity to see a blue moon. On New Year's Eve, the second full moon for the month of December is going to make an appearance. Being able to see a blue moon on New Year's Eve is a rare occurrence because it only happens every 19 years, so the next one won't be until 2028. If you happen to be in Times Square you want to make sure, you take a second to look up because right above you will be the full moon.
