A blue moon is a rare occurrence, and no, a blue moon does not mean that the moon will be blue at night. The term blue moon refers to a full moon that is not in conjunction with the regular monthly pattern. In fact, a blue moon only happens once every two or three years because of the extra days that accumulate through the years.

In 2009, you will have the opportunity to see a blue moon. On New Year's Eve, the second full moon for the month of December is going to make an appearance. Being able to see a blue moon on New Year's Eve is a rare occurrence because it only happens every 19 years, so the next one won't be until 2028.
