Rookie Rand Paul Claims Kentucky's Republican Senate Primary

Section:
US News, Kentucky: Senator Rand Paul

In a humiliating and crushing defeat, newbie Rand Paul was voted the new Republican Senate primary in Kentucky over supposedly favored Secretary of State, Trey Grayson. Rand, with the strength of the Tea Party and his daddy Congressman Ron Paul's donor base backing him, managed to secure a wide lead over his competition shortly after the polls closed according to ABC News.

Though Grayson had some serious Republican star power to his name, with endorsements from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to former vice president Dick Cheney, Rand's support of the growing Tea Party movement ultimately spelled victory for him, and suggests that the group should no longer be taken lightly. In a speech, Rand boldly announces, "I have a message, a message from the Tea Party, a message that is loud and clear and does not mince words: We have come to take our government back."

An everyday ophthalmologist winning a political seat shows evidence of a shifting attitude of voters toward the anti-establishment. Voter Brad Leix, who voted for Rand, vocalizes this fact: "I'm just tired of the government insiders. You've got certain people who've been in office for so long. We need some outside views that aren't afraid to rock the boat a little bit. So, I think that people like him will be good for the country."

Son to Ron Paul and the third of five children, Rand completed a General Surgery Internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and earned his ophthalmology residency at Duke University. Before his new life as a popular politico, he was fixing problems on a much smaller scale at his eye surgery business for 18 years.
